Unitec's The Hub and Construction, Engineering and Trades Building Redevelopment has recently been completed. RDT were engaged as Project Managers for these exciting developments at Unitec’s campus in Mt Albert. Our project team of David Prentice, Mike Hanson, Vimal Kumar & John Murphy are thrilled to have contributed to this project.

The Hub:

The Hub comprises 1,286m2 of new build construction (in an existing open-air courtyard) and 4,679m2 of refurbished adjacent existing space. Unitec wanted the redesign to become the heart of a world-class campus, and to support a more modern teaching and learning experience, fitting of a modern 21st century Institute of Technology.

There is a mix of spaces, ranging from café-style open environments merging with collaborative study areas, semi-enclosed library spaces, study pods overlooking the main space, and enclosed study and meeting rooms.

Some of the more interesting features are the new floating floors to be inserted above the current courtyard and the timber grid supporting a new high-level roof and the living green wall. The new main space is triple-height, enclosed by richly textured walls and opening out to the east to the green outdoors through a large glazed wall.

CET Building:

The CET Building comprises approximately 5,000m2 of new build, clear span workshop space to the West of the Student Hub. It is designed around the principle of adaptive, flexible workshop space which can be reconfigured to suit a range of trade based teaching and learning outcomes.

Central to the CET building is a 4 x 4 metre building services grid containing power, data and air extraction. This enables the reconfiguration of workshop equipment, teaching processes and learning outcomes on as “as required” basis – this building is designed under the “long life loose fit” principle. The building will be able to accommodate approximately 450 people on the main workshop floor at any one time.
