The two-story extension of Huia Pool boasts a much wider range of facilities, adding two new pools to the existing complex, plus a 400m² gymnasium, offices and amenity areas for staff, changing facilities and a plant room.
Facilities include a purpose-built pool to house Huia’s highly successful Swim City lessons, a hydrotherapy pool for exercise and rehabilitation and a gym for health and wellbeing. The learn-to-swim pool has been built to meet the growing demand for water education.
The building of a new facility also means there is more room in the current main pool for lane swimmers, recreational users and it will free up space in the current children’s pool. The new 25-metre by 10-metre pool is housed in its own building.
Another big addition is a hydrotherapy pool designed for people who have a disability, are less mobile, are rehabilitating from an injury or would benefit from low impact exercises such as water walking and slow-lane swimming.
The existing pools remained in full use throughout the building process. We worked closely with Hutt City Council to monitor costs and successfully brought the project in under budget. A highly complex and coordinated integration of an existing pool into a new pool and fitness facility, Huia Pool + Fitness will be a huge asset to the local community for many years to come.
