This project involved internal refurbishment of the Category 2 Historic Building, formerly the Rotorua Post Office and now the main Rotorua Tourism Centre. Along with the refurbishment to create a new café, the scope includes the seismic upgrade of the clock tower, from a seismic rating of 30%NBS to 90%NBS, via concealed internal steel frame.

The construction was undertaken in three distinctive phases, to ensure continuity of operational capacity, on a site where construction access was limited during the hours of 7 am to 7 pm daily. Seismic strengthening of the clock tower needed to be unobtrusive from the exterior, so this was constructed within and connected to the inside of the clocktower. Prefabricated steel sections that can be carried up the tower were selected, due to the existing timber framing.

Through its Destination Rotorua services, the Rotorua Lakes Council is responsible for enhancing the experiences of local and international visitors to the city. The i-Site building is the ‘shop front’ for Destination Rotorua and has more than 800,000 visitors through its doors every year. RDT Pacific’s role included Project Management and Cost Management/Quantity Surveying services throughout the project.
