Queen Charlotte College, the only co-educational secondary school in Marlborough, has undergone a major transformation. The redevelopment replaced outdated learning spaces with two new buildings for technology, library, and administration functions. It also addressed high-priority weathertightness issues and upgraded key infrastructure, including heating, roofing, and electrical systems.

RDT Pacific was appointed through a competitive tender process to provide Engineer to Contract, Engineer’s Representative and Project Management Services, from master planning to completion. Our team managed the delivery of the works in a live school environment through a carefully staged construction and decanting strategy.

Initial works included temporary refurbishment of existing buildings to accommodate admin and technology functions. This was followed by asbestos removal, demolition of existing structures, and construction of new facilities. At the same time, we managed campus-wide upgrades including reroofing, HVAC installation, and transformer replacement.

A key challenge was managing long lead times for transformer and switchboard upgrades, alongside staged asbestos removal. These risks were mitigated through close collaboration with the contractor and resequencing of works. Our flexible, phased approach allowed the school to remain operational and ensured site access was restored at the earliest opportunity.

Our strategic phasing and decanting plan helped reduce sunk construction costs, maintain school operations, and deliver the project ahead of schedule. Regular coordination with the school and stakeholders ensured smooth transitions between each stage.

The redevelopment delivers modern, flexible spaces that support teaching and learning. It improves comfort, safety, and energy efficiency with modern HVAC, roofing, and electrical systems. Sustainability features include the use of recycled fishing net surfaces and energy-efficient heating.

The project also benefited from strong engagement with local iwi, ensuring the final outcome reflects local identity and values. The upgraded campus positions Queen Charlotte College as a future-ready learning environment that supports its students, staff, and wider community.
