Taiora QEII Recreation and Sport Centre

RDT Pacific managed the complete process from concept planning, including extensive consultation with iwi and the community, and the tender and construction process, to hand over the first stage of this facility on 23 April 2018.

Designed in partnership with the local community, the QEII Recreation and Sport Centre boasts an impressive array of aquatic facilities,  including a 130-metre long hydroslide, a 25-metre lap pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river channel and water toys, a learn-to-swim pool, a hydrotherapy pool, and a spa, sauna and steam room. The complex also has a fitness centre, a café, meeting rooms, and enough parking for 200 vehicles and 160 bicycles.

The project was procured through a design and build tender process based on a comprehensive set of client requirements which included performance specifications and a fully developed preliminary design. All design consultants involved in the preparation of the design and build tender documents were retained for observation and review through the design and construction phases. This ensured the quality aspects of the project were maintained throughout the design and build process.

The project was delivered within the original approved budget and completed ahead of programme.

The new centre officially opened on 31 May 2018.

Testimonial

Work on the centre has progressed ahead of schedule and we can’t wait to welcome people through the doors and to see them enjoying the new facilities. It is going to be a major milestone for the east and a cause for celebration.
